For your consideration, we are offering for sale this Gorgeous Restored Circa 1923 Waterman #554 Black Hard Rubber with 14K Solid Gold Smooth Overlay Fountain Pen. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, cleaned, and put back together and now is in wonderful writing condition.
Ultrasonically cleaned the NIB, feed, and section. Hand cleaned the inside of the barrel and cap with mineral oil. Cleaned, buffed, and polished the outside of the cap and barrel. Replaced the old rubber sac with a new sac. Hand polished the 14K Solid Gold Waterman Clip, 14K Cap, 14K Barrel, 14K Lever Box Assembly along with the Waterman 14K #4 NIB.
This fountain pen is made from black hard rubber with 14K Solid Gold (not plated) Overlay which is a smooth pattern. The lever is crisp and clean with "IDEAL" on the lever easily seen with the naked eye. The Waterman Cap displays display some tiny pinhead dings along to top area of the cap. The barrel is free from any dings or denting/ All 14K Solid Gold trim and overlay has been polished to shine brightly. This Waterman #554 barrel has an imprint at the barrel end that reads, "WATERMAN'S REG U.S. PAT. OFF. MADE IN USA". The butt end of the fountain pen has the "554" imprint. The threads on the cap and barrel are excellent with the cap always securing tightly to the barrel. There are no monograms or personalizations to either the cap or barrel. This Waterman #554 measures 5 1/2" in length capped and 6 3/4" posted.
The lever and box assembly has been cleaned and oiled. I have tested the lever filling systems with water and works flawlessly and as it was originally intended to.
This Waterman has a great #4 WATERMAN IDEAL Flex Nib that is a pleasure to write with. The iridium tipping is in excellent condition with the point measuring .79mm when measured with digital calipers - a medium nib point. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with a fine line measuring roughly .42mm and flexes to 1.83mm with medium to firm pressure when measured with digital calipers. The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Parker Quink Blue Ink.
Any specks of white in the images are from the cotton that I used to clean the barrel and cap.
This antique Waterman #554 14K Solid Gold Fountain Pen is not an easy example to find without monograms or personalizations. I would consider the condition of this fountain pen to grade in Fine to Very Fine condition the dings on the cap are not allowing me to put this in the Excellent condition category. Still, a fabulous and uncommon example in the 554 model to add to one's writing arsenal collection.
